DEATH & DYING WORKSHOP OVERVIEW We are often taught by our teachers to look into this sense of self. Who am I? Without some sense of this answer we enter into our dying with fear and trepidation. What we worked so hard for, what we carefully saved, all this must go. What then? Death is all around us, in large and small ways. Do we dare to move toward it for the benefit of ourselves and others, or do we turn away in the hope that we will be better prepared another day?
During this day we will look into this great matter of life and death. Combining practical considerations and the ancient wisdom of the Dharma, we will try to discover our true relationship to mortality, and life, and to this sense of “self.”
With meditation and mindfulness as a basis, we will create space together to look into the larger questions of how we live, and how we die. We will look into obstacles that prevent us from stepping more fully into this life and toward death. The role of grief, the need to be present to our own suffering and that of others will direct us toward be a companion to those facing their death. The day will include some short writing exercises and small group inquiry as well as lecture and periods of meditation.
